About this event
Marking the 81st anniversary of Liberation, the 2026 Seodaemun Independence & Democracy Festival runs for two days, August 15 (Sat) to 16 (Sun), around the Seodaemun Prison History Hall and Independence Park.
Under the theme "Seodaemun-gu, united in the light of Liberation," this flagship history-and-culture festival honors the spirit of sacrifice of patriotic martyrs and shares the joy of Liberation with citizens through a wide range of celebratory cultural events.
The August 15 memorial ceremony and celebratory stage feature meaningful congratulatory remarks and addresses, along with a taekwondo performance, "popera," and concerts by singers Son Seung-yeon and Park Jung-hyun. Side events include a drawing contest for independence, the "Road of Liberation Challenge," stamp rallies, and guided history-hall tours — plenty of programs that let everyone, from children to adults, enjoy education and culture together.
