About this event
The Gwanak Gang Gam-chan Festival is a leading historical and cultural festival of Seoul, held in Gwanak, a district that holds history, to honor the patriotic spirit and achievements of General Gang Gam-chan, the hero of the Battle of Gwiju. It is a leading Seoul historical-cultural festival held to commemorate the patriotic spirit of General Gang Gam-chan, the great commander of Goryeo, and Gwanak's representative festival created and enjoyed together by the residents of Gwanak-gu. The Gang Gam-chan Festival integrates the "Gwanaksan Royal Azalea Festival," Gwanak-gu's representative traditional cultural festival run since 1998, and the "Nakseongdae Inheonje," a memorial rite held since 1988, newly launching in 2016. Set against cultural heritage infused with the general's spirit: Nakseongdae, where General Gang Gam-chan is said to have been born at the spot where the fourth star of the Big Dipper fell; Inheon-dong, named after the general's posthumous title; and Seowon-dong, home to a pavilion the general often visited when traveling to and from Songdo. The festival carries on his legacy through diverse programs shaped by who we are today. In the third week of October, "Tomorrow Gang Gam-chan" begins. Marking its 10th anniversary in 2026, the Gwanak Gang Gam-chan Festival expands its content into a K-Culture-infused leading Goryeo historical-cultural festival of Seoul, newly emerging as a sustainable, mutually beneficial festival that connects generations and revitalizes the region.
