About this event

Legend has it that Samnangseong Fortress, which surrounds Jeondeungsa Temple, was built by the three sons of Dangun to repel foreign invasions. During the Goryeo dynasty, after the court took refuge on Ganghwado Island from the Mongol invasion, it was at the Samnangseong temporary palace that the will to resist the Mongols burned while a great Buddhist assembly was held for 120 days. The fortress also safeguarded the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty for 250 years, was the victorious ground of the Byeongin Yangyo that repelled the French forces, and, at the close of the 19th century, saw righteous armies win a week-long battle against imperial Japan. A place that has engaged with 5,000 years of Korean history and embodies the nation's self-respect, it inspires pride in this remarkable past. To feel that pride and share it widely, the Samnangseong History and Culture Festival has been held annually from the first Saturday of October, reaching its 26th edition this year.
